Since 2005, the Global Health Learning Center (GHLC) has provided state-of-the-art global health information online, worldwide. Access is easy and free.
The primary audience for the Global Health Learning Center is health sector staff, but any individual with the desire or need to learn is welcome to take any courses.
In 2005, USAID’s Bureau of Global Health developed the Global Health Learning Center to provide its worldwide mission-based health staff with access to state of the art technical global health information.
The courses and certificate programs at the Center offered self-paced Internet-based courses that:
The primary audience for the Global Health Learning Center is health sector staff at missions around the world. Registration is easy and free – brought to you by USAID and the American people.
Each course is authored by a subject matter expert or a team of experts, is highly focused, and can be completed in about one to two hours. Learners can access a course in multiple visits and a pick up where they left off at any time. Although courses are designed to be taken online, a printer-friendly format allows you to download and print course materials for further study. Some titles are available in languages other than English. Learners can complete individual courses, or a series of related courses as part of a certificate program.
The courses combine technical content with programming principles, best practices, and case studies. Concrete examples stimulate a learner’s thinking so that they can solve problems and apply best practices to programming in the field setting. The Center offers the best of international development implementation science for the health sector. The Global Health Learning Center is the primary learning destination for leaders and experts in the field of international health for development!
USAID transferred operational responsibility for GHLC to The Frank Foundation, which led to another significant platform upgrade. Courses were migrated to a Moodle Learning Management System, where the offerings were expanded to include a broader range of health-related professional development courses from NextGenU.org’s existing library. The GHLC will continue to evolve, incorporating new courses and updates to meet the changing needs of global health professionals. It remains a vital resource for continuous learning and capacity building in the global health sector.
USAID retained ownership via the USAID Global Health Training, Advisory, and Support Contract (GHTASC) project managed by Credence Management Solutions LLC, under which Encompass, LLC continued to ensure the platform remained secure and courses continued to be updated and added.
Ownership and responsibility for the GHeL platform was transferred to the Global Health Professional and Organizational Development (GHPOD) II program, awarded to EnCompass LLC. The platform went through another upgrade in preparation for approval by USAID’s website governance board. Other system improvements as well as course development continued, ensuring the platform met learners’ needs.
The platform underwent a redesign, led by CCP, to improve user experience, add multilingual capabilities, and incorporate certificate programs and scenario-based questions. In addition, the course offering expanded. For example, CCP in collaboration with USAID, the Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed and integrated a series of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) related courses along with child survival, nutrition, and health system strengthening courses.
Funded by USAID’s Bureau of Global Health, the GHLC was launched to offer state-of-the-art technical global health information to USAID staff globally. The platform was developed and managed by the INFO project led by Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs (CCP).
